Matt Duchene was drafted 3rd overall in 2009 by the Colorado Avalanche, his favourite team growing up. He idolized Joe Sakic, and his play has even been compared to Sakic's. Duchene was in a heated race with John Tavares, and Victor Hedman going into the draft. He was rated 2nd among North American skaters going into the draft. After both the New York islanders and the Tampa Bay lightning passed him up, he was seen fist pumping in joy to be able to play for his favourite team.
